Let’s get started:
The first step to building a successful social media marketing agency is identifying your niche. I know I know I’m like a broken record!
You need to find the specific types of businesses and services that align with your skills and interests, and more importantly have a real need for the social media marketing solutions you'll provide.
Find demand and provide supply.
Don’t try to build demand where it doesn’t exist.
Going narrow with your niche is crucial. A social media marketing agency targeting "small businesses" is far too broad. You'll be competing with tons of other bigger and (honestly!) better providers, and it will be hard to stand out.
Instead, identify the nicest niches where you can become a specialised expert.
Going super narrow with your niche is crucial. A social media marketing agency targeting "small businesses in London" is still far too broad. You'll be competing with tons of other providers, and it will be hard to stand out.
Instead, identify the nicest niches where you can become a specialised micro-expert.
There are 7 main ways to niche down:
1. By price
2. By problem
3. By industry
4. By location
5. By situation
6. By experience
7. By demographic
For example, social media marketing for:
Brainstorm a list of potential niches with our Niche Generator tool. Look for boring and traditional businesses that aren't using social media well, where you can make a tangible impact.
The best niches are ones where social media done right can directly drive leads and sales.
Here’s a prompt to get you started:
Act as a business strategist
Identify profitable niches for a social media marketing agency.
Add these details where relevant.
Location: [location here]
Industry interest: [niche]
Use these guidelines to generate 10 niche ideas:
Combine your location, industry interest, ideal client size and budget
Focus on niches where there is an obvious need for SMM, for example their customers must be social media users
Get ultra-targeted by focusing on a specific service, part of the city, revenue range
For example: Social media marketing for small dental clinics with 2-3 locations in Central London and $2000-$3000 per month budget
Brainstorm 10 different versions by varying the specifics like geography, specialty, revenue, ad spend
Here are the first 6 when using London and healthcare as the variables.
Are these too niche?
Generally there’s no such thing! If you start hyper niche and get success you can always expand.
Conversely if you start too wide you’ll never get traction and you won’t be able to pivot. It’s always better to start super niche first.
Finding the right niche takes some upfront research, but doing so ensures your agency is set up for success from day one. You can clearly communicate your value, charge higher prices, and build a steady stream of clients.
We’ll be building on that as we move forward - right now just go ahead and come up with some niche ideas.
Having niche ideas is all well and good but we need to check that there’s a demand as well.
We can do this using Google Ads.
The basic idea is we want to go into Google Ads and conduct keyword research to check:
We can do this by searching for “social media for niche”
And specifically we’re looking for high search volume and low competition.
We need to use the Keyword Planner, which is free.
Head to Google Ads, Tools, Keyword Planner.
Add your targeted country or set to Worldwide. Set date range to All Available.
Use the keyword “social media for niche” to get wide results.
This gives us an idea of volume and competition for a term that a business owner would search.
For instance “social media for yoga studio” would be a search that an owner of a yoga studio would use.
You’re looking to check what the monthly volume is for your niche - ideally it should be in the hundreds. We want to avoid 0-10 volume.
We also ideally want to see Low or Medium competition. Generally high volume searches have high competition - if you can find a high volume search with Low or Medium competition you’re onto a good thing.
Don’t want to set up a Google Ads account?
No problem - I’ve gone ahead and done a wide scan of lots of niches for you. It looks like this:
You’re interested in the keyword which gives you the niche, the average monthly searches and the competition (indexed value, out of 100).
Here’s a link to all the data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1c_Dg8q0JyB-F3eN-7S87QW0aFlUZzdgto31d7sUVJgE/edit?usp=sharing
You can duplicate, sort and edit as needed.
Also if you want specific help with Google Ads ask in the community where I’m able to support.
Now we’ve got a potential niche we’re going to start testing out the market, building our portfolio and growing our reputation. We’ll cover that in the next Part.
